Are You Sleeping on an Old Mattress?

By | Mattress | No Comments

If you are sleeping inadequately or are constantly tired from not getting enough rest, it may be an indication that it is time to replace your mattress. Due to a lack of support, a poor bed can even lead to back pain, since your spine may be poorly aligned. Although people are working longer, stressful hours, an old, uncomfortable surface may be the culprit behind you not getting a good night’s sleep.

Generally, mattresses should be replaced every ten years, but swapping out mattresses every 5-7 years may be recommended if you are older than 40. If yours is ten years old, you have likely slept for nearly 30,000 hours on it. When mattresses become saggy, that is a clear indication that they should be ousted from a bed frame. If you have gained or lost weight, even that could be reason enough to start looking at new mattresses.

It is always best to do some shopping instead of making a blind purchase. When testing out new mattresses, make an effort to lie down for a few moments in a sleeping position; this way, you are better able to find something that you will enjoy sleeping on. You should never buy online or over the phone unless you have actually tested your desired model in a store.

An effective bed should be able to reduce both back and neck pain, since it will provide much more support than an aged, unshapely one. Newer foam models have replaced the classic coil style, and are praised for evenly distributing weight and reducing pressure points. Once you have made a purchase, it is important to take steps to ensure that your acquisition is long-lasting.

Rotating and flipping your new possession can be helpful since it will maximize its lifespan, much like rotating a set of tires. Mattresses can be rotated 180 degrees, so that the head is now at the foot, and vice-versa. Double-sided mattresses can be flipped over so that the bottom is on top. For mattresses to be most effective, this process should be performed every few months.

You should not underestimate the importance and comfort of a new mattress. If you are not sleeping as well as you think you should, invest in a good night’s sleep and overhaul your bed.
